Most of the seedling cuttings of red pine, which I did last week, have withered…
I did it as I did always, but what was wrong…?
Current situation
This is current situation;
Most of the seedlings have withered.
It looks like they went rotten rather than withered. Some of them look like “melted”.
I picked them up and they broke into small parts… Seems like water was too much…?
Now, I abandonded bad seedlings and change them to new ones.

It was lucky that I had a lot of seedlings.
17~18 seedlings have withered, so it looks like more than enough for that. However they keep growing, true leaves at center are long now. Maybe it is too late for seedling cutting.
What to change
I didn’t want to make same failure as last time, I changed something. But basic way is the same as lust time.
Immersed in the water
I never did this before, but I immersed the seedlings in the water for one hour after I cut it. The purpose is to make the seedlings absorb enough water.
Don’t see the water quite dirty… The end of stem have to be in the water.
Leave stem longer
Last time I tried to make stem as short as possible, but because of that the leaves touched the soil. So, when I watered them the soil rise to surface, then the soil covered leaves. So I left longer stem this time to avoid it.

I chose the photo of the seedling with longest stem. Actually the difference is not so big. However I tried the leaves don’t touch the soil.
This one looks short. As you see the true leaves at center are not long so much. I feel like this is ideal timing to do seedling cutting.
How to care of the seedlings
I thought “I have to water them a lot since they don’t have roots and they cannot absorb enough water”, ” I have to avoid exposing them to sunlight to avoid transpiring too much water from the leaves” and therefore, I kept the seedlings at the lower part of the rack. Now I guess it was bad, maybe they need sunlight anyway for transpiring moderate amount of water from the leaves. Of course it is important to keep the soil wet.
4 lines from the right side are new ones. I really hope they grow this time…
By the way these seedlings are the ones on top of the rack. They look like ok so far. Maybe sunlight is necessary anyway.
